Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia)

Crafting a case for support at Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia)

The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) plays an essential cultural role in the community, providing accessible art experiences to people across the region. Due to growth, infrastructure needs, and a changing world, Mia needed to make updates to its building. Changes to Mia’s campus were necessary to ensure the facilities and campus continued to serve diverse audiences and expand global collections. Mia’s comprehensive plan for these exciting improvements focused on three things – Inclusion, Excellence, and Sustainability.

Our perspective:

M. Gale recognized that an investment in Mia would act as a driver of future success, ensuring a continued focus on its mission. To provide this catalyst today for tomorrow’s success, M. Gale focused on two goals:

  1. Ensuring the museum’s vast collections remain vibrant, strong, and well cared for

  2. Securing Mia’s future as the preeminent encyclopedic museum for this region.

With these goals in mind, M. Gale conducted research and partnered with Mia on curating a specific comprehensive Case for Support and donor proposal, focused on long-term accessibility.

How we solved the challenge:

  • Mia received a $20 million philanthropic response to the curated proposal and comprehensive Case for Support.

  • This generous gift reflected the donor’s alignment with the museum’s mission and a shared vision for the next century.

  • Plans for the gift include building a new campus and galleries, keeping admission free for all visitors, and more.

Our Client’s Outcome:

It was a pleasure to partner with M. Gale on developing a case for support and proposal for a leadership gift to help launch Mia’s new comprehensive facility and campus plan. The team asked all the right questions and helped guide not only the messaging, but also the strategy behind this important request. Having their outside perspective was critical to a donor-centric approach and led to a successful eight-figure gift and the potential for a second phase. I am delighted to work with them as we move into a new round of leadership gift requests.
