New for 2021 – Leading with Intent: BoardSource Index of Nonprofit Board Practices

We always eagerly anticipate the publishing of BoardSource’s Leading with Intent report. It’s data rich information focused on the Work, the People, the Culture, and the Impact of nonprofit boards. It also provides a detailed roadmap for focus areas of improvement. M. Gale uses this data in our practice with our clients to benchmark and guide best practices with their nonprofit boards.

This year’s report doesn’t disappoint. In addition to these key findings, the supplemental report Reviewing the State of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on Nonprofit Boards gives us a straightforward, objective reading of where we are AND provides thought-provoking takeaways for consideration throughout.

Here are Leading with Intent’s Key Findings which may surprise you. A copy of the full report can be downloaded from BoardSource:
  1. Boards are disconnected from the communities and people they serve.
  2. Boards that prioritize fundraising above all else when it comes to the board’s role do so at the expense of organizational strategy, relevance and impact.
  3. Board and executives should reflect on what is prioritized in terms of board expectations and how time is spent.
  4. The board chair’s leadership in ensuring that there are clear expectations of board service seem to matter most when it comes to the board’s overall culture.
